Lab for Chip Design and Microelectronics

Detailed image of a modern PCB with two microcontrollers.

The Lab for Chip Design and Microelectronics allows detailed insights into the layout and functionality of modern, digital circuits. Here, students can learn hardware-related programming of microcontrollers and gain experience in designing, simulating and verifying microelectronic circuits.

Laboratory: Room 1.1.04

Teaching

All students of the Bachelor's programmes Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechatronics (German), and Mechatronics (English) will have a minimum of two semesters to experiment in the Lab for Chip Design and Microelectronics. In addition, there is the opportunity to various practical courses for students of Business and Engineering (German and English) and Technology of Functional Materials:

Exercises and practical courses accompanying the lecture:

For the bachelor’s programme in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (BET; in German):

  • Exercises for the lecture “Digital Technology” (digital circuit design, digital basic circuits, and circuit simulation)
  • Exercises for the lecture “Microcomputer Technology” (building and testing a microcontroller evaluation board, hardware-related programming, digital transmission codes and memory organisation)
  • Exercises for the lecture “Circuit Design with VHDL” (designing digital circuits with a Xilinx Zynq FPGA)
  • Practical test: Automation at the EMC measuring station
  • Various tasks to be carried out in connection with the development project

For the bachelor's programme in Mechatronics (BMC, in German):

  • Exercises accompanying the lecture “Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering” (RLC circuit)
  • Exercises accompanying the lecture “Microcomputer Systems 1” (digital circuit design, digital basic circuits, and circuit simulation)
  • Exercises accompanying the lecture “Microcomputer Systems 2” (digital transmission codes and memory organisation)
  • Exercises for elective module “Embedded Systems and Process Applications” (designing digital circuits with a Xilinx Zynq FPGA)
  • General Engineering Lab (GELab) about designing a digital adder

For the bachelor's programme in Mechatronics (IMC, in English):

  • Exercises for lecture "Microcomputer Systems 1" (Digital circuit design, basic digital gates and circuit simulation)
  • Exercises for lecture "Microcomputer Systems 2" (Digital transmission codes and memory organization)
  • General Engineering Lab (GELab, design of a digital adder)

Practical courses:

For the Bachelor's programmes Business and Engineering (German and English)

  • Lab course (Design of a digital adder)
  • Laboratory Test (Design of a digital adder)

For the degree programme “Technology of Functional Materials”:

  • Experiment “Digital Circuits” within the scope of the General Engineering Lab

Equipment

Among other equipment, the lab offers

  • 15 PC workstations with professional software systems for digital circuit synthesis, simulation and circuit board production
  • The work stations are equipped with circuit analysers, soldering stations, breadboards, and digital oscilloscopes
  • Various demo boards for microcontrollers
  • Xilinx evaluation boards for Zynq-7000 and Spartan-3 FPGA
  • Two EMC measuring stations incl. spectrum analyser
  • 3D printing system to support development projects
